Call for Proposals - Race, Ethnicity and Child Maltreatment

The International Journal on Child Maltreatment: Research, Policy and Practice is soliciting proposals for an upcoming thematic issue focused on race, ethnicity and child maltreatment. Across the globe, the presence of disproportionality and disparity within child welfare systems is well known.

The persistence of inequities across races and ethnicities is common knowledge, and yet, disproportionality and disparity remain intact. For this special issue, we are interested in the extent to which such social conditions and systemic responses affect the entrance into child welfare and efforts to use that knowledge to design interventions and policies to mitigate the impact of racism.

Examples of topics of interest for the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following:

Displays of racial/ethnic inequities in child welfare and social services.
The consequences of racial/ethnic inequities in child welfare and social services systems and their impact on the wellbeing of minoritized children, youth and families.
The impact of disparities in child welfare and social services systems on reporting child maltreatment and its disclosure.
Explication of the mechanisms through which disproportionality and disparity persist and strategies for disruption.
Strategies, initiatives and policies to address racism and its effects on the child welfare system.
The impact of use of data, statistical algorithms and machine learning techniques on child welfare outcomes for minoritized children, youth and families.
The experiences of racism among minoritized children and families involved with the child welfare system.
Strengths-based, supportive services for minoritized families involved with the child welfare system or at risk of such involvement.

Submissions may include:

A variety of article types, including empirical research, editorials, commentaries, policy analyses, historical overviews, theoretical or review articles, and innovations in policy or practice.

For consideration in the special issue:

Authors should submit proposals of no more than 250 words by July 31, 2023 to the email: specialissue.ijcm@gmail.com

Proposal should include: an abstract, intended article type, and the full list of authors.
Approval of abstracts will be sent out by August 15, 2023, and final manuscripts are due February 15, 2024. The issue will be published in June 2024. ,
